Forbidden Island Review: A Tense, Twisty Survival Thriller That Keeps You Guessing

Forbidden Island is a sleek, sun-drenched nightmare that sneaks up on you. Directed by newcomer Mara Ellison, this 2025 survival thriller takes a familiar premise—strangers stranded on a deserted island—and injects it with a venomous dose of paranoia and supernatural dread. It’s the kind of film that thrives on atmosphere, and Ellison delivers a confident, stylish debut that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final frame.

Critics Score
74%
Audience Score
82%

The numbers reflect a film that critics respect and audiences genuinely enjoy. With a 74% critics score and an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Forbidden Island has carved out a solid reputation as a smart, well-crafted genre piece. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it spins it with enough style and intelligence to stand out from the crowded survival-thriller pack.

Critics have praised the film’s relentless pacing and its clever script, which slowly peels back layers of mystery. The Hollywood Reporter called it “a taut, gripping thriller that uses its isolated setting to maximum effect,” while Variety noted that “Ellison directs with a steady hand, building tension through sound design and shadow rather than cheap jump scares.” IndieWire highlighted the performances, writing that “the ensemble cast brings a raw, desperate energy that makes every argument and alliance feel life-or-death.”

Of course, it’s not perfect. A few critics felt the third act veers into overly familiar territory, and some of the dialogue can feel a bit on-the-nose. But even the naysayers admit that Forbidden Island is a cut above the usual B-movie fare. It’s a film that respects its audience’s intelligence, delivering a satisfying blend of psychological tension, visceral scares, and genuine emotional stakes. For fans of The Descent or Eden Lake, this is a must-watch.

Captain Elias “Cap” Roarke
Sofia Blake

Liam Carver (The Nightingale, Blackout) leads the ensemble as Jack Mercer, a former soldier struggling with PTSD who becomes the group’s reluctant leader. Carver brings a haunted, coiled intensity to the role, making Jack both sympathetic and unpredictable. Elena Marquez (The Politician, Zero Day) is equally compelling as Dr. Rachel Vance, a marine biologist whose scientific curiosity slowly gives way to sheer terror. Her performance anchors the film’s emotional core.

Tobias Raine (Peaky Blinders, The Last Kingdom) delivers a scene-stealing turn as Ben Hollis, a loud-mouthed tech billionaire whose arrogance becomes a liability. Priya Anand (Homeland, The Good Fight) is excellent as Maya Kapoor, a resourceful engineer who refuses to be a damsel. Dermot Walsh brings gruff authority to Captain Roarke, while Sofia Blake plays Jack’s teenage daughter Lily, whose presence raises the stakes considerably. Kofi Mensah and Ingrid Larsen round out the cast as two mysterious passengers with secrets of their own.

Forbidden Island Plot: Paradise Has a Dark Side

The story begins with a luxury yacht charter gone horribly wrong. A diverse group of passengers—including a troubled ex-soldier, a marine biologist, a tech mogul, and a teenage girl—are en route to a remote archipelago when a violent storm cripples their vessel. They awaken to find themselves washed ashore on a lush, uncharted island that doesn’t appear on any map. At first, it seems like a paradise: white sand, fresh water, and abundant fruit. But something is deeply wrong.

As the survivors explore, they discover the ruins of an abandoned research facility. Inside, they find disturbing evidence of a secret experiment—one that involved genetic manipulation and went catastrophically wrong. The island’s wildlife is aggressive and unnatural, and the group begins to realize they are not alone. Someone—or something—is watching them from the jungle. Tensions rise as food runs low and the true nature of their situation becomes clear: they were not brought here by accident.

As alliances form and fracture, the survivors must confront not only the external threats of the island but also their own inner demons. Jack must face the trauma of his past to protect his daughter, Rachel must grapple with the ethical implications of the research she discovers, and Ben must decide whether his wealth and influence mean anything in a place where survival is the only currency. The film builds to a tense, claustrophobic climax as the group uncovers the island’s final, horrifying secret—and realizes that escape may be impossible.

“The island doesn’t want you to leave.”
